Turning Red is here
Hi All!
I’ve had a long day — I was on zoom all day in a workshop for my MBA program. It was a brutal class for a few different reasons, but what kept me going was knowing that tonight I would be curling up with Turning Red.
I cannot wait to watch this movie.
I’ll put it this way, I was lacking the motivation to get you the newsletter this week but I need everyone in my life to watch this movie. It is so important for the Canadian film industry, for the Chinese-Canadian community, and for preteens obsessed with boy bands everywhere.
It’s been two years of the “two-week” pandemic and we deserve a cute Pixar movie to curl up with this weekend.
So let’s get into it so I can hit send and put the movie on :)
This week on the blog:
I’ve got a throwback blog post for you!
This Thursday is St. Patrick’s Day. I’m relinking my guide to the best Irish content and this is my annual reminder that you can watch RTÉ. There is a lot of great content there, so pour a pint of Guinness and curl up with some fantastic Irish TV/Movies.
One update from last year’s post — Leap Year is now on Netflix. Plus I should add Belfast to the list. It was phenomenal.
Things to watch this week:
Obviously, I’m starting with the movie I’ve been waiting months for… Turning Red. If you somehow missed it, Turning Red is set in Toronto about a Chinese-Canadian preteen who is obsessed with the boyband 4*TOWN … and turns into a giant red panda when she has big emotions. Written and Directed by Canadian Academy Award Winning director Domee Shi. I am so so excited to watch this. Stream it today on Disney+ .
Over on Netflix, we’ve got another Canadian-made movie worth checking out —you’ve got to watch The Adam Project. I got to see the film last week for work and it was really fun. It’s a boy’s action film in all the best ways. It’s Ryan Reynolds being Ryan. It’s Jenna and Matty reunited (but TBH… I wanted more of them together). It’s just a fun movie, with beautiful scenery (it was filmed in BC), and that cheeky tone you know and love Ryan for. Watch the trailer here.
Also on Netflix today, season four of Formula 1: Drive to Survive drops. I know a lot of people who love this series. I really want to get into it. I’ve watched the first episode of the first season so many times, but I keep getting distracted and never come back to it. Perhaps this is my moment. Reply to this email if you’re into the show. Check out the trailer here.
On Sunday at 9:00 p.m. I will be watching CNN because we’ve got Stanley Tucci’s Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy with a negroni in hand because I deserve it. Watch the trailer here.
There are other things coming out but I’m skipping to Thursday…
Below Deck Down Under is now a thing and it is what I need. It should be airing on Hayu but I’m not quite sure if it will be streaming on Thursday or if it airs on Thursdays and then we get it on Friday. Regardless, I’m thrilled. Check out the trailer here.
Other things to check out:
📺 So TBH I’m glued to the News. It’s the only thing that I’m consuming these days.
If you want to a news person but are saying “but Paula, I don’t have a TV, I can’t watch ‘the news’!” I have the answer. The National is a daily ritual for me and I watch it on YouTube. It steams daily at 9:00 p.m. ET. If you start it at like 9:15, you can skip through the TV commercial breaks. If you miss the stream, you can watch it at any time. I cannot recommend it enough. Watch it here.
🎶 So I want to leave you on a good note. Ben Rector is one of my favourite feel-good artists. He released a song today with Snoop Dogg. It is liquid sunshine. Listen to it here.
Have a great weekend,
-Paula
