May 28th or is it still March...
Hi All,
It’s the last Friday in May and I’m feeling good. This week was a *good* week for me. Work was interesting, I’m feeling optimistic about everyone getting vaccinated, and I’ve had a few wins.
One is that I got the Gold Merit Award from Girl Guides of Canada this week. The award is presented to adult members for outstanding service to Guiding. Normally you have to get the Bronze and Silver before you can get the Gold — but they made an exception for me 😭😭😭. I was so touched.
As I said last week, I also got my second shot as I work in a hospital. Fair warning to all of you — when you book your second shot, make sure you take the next day off or at the least don’t book any important meetings. The side effects are REAL. The next day, I couldn’t do anything but sleep. I had no energy to get out of bed. It was wild. But like clockwork, 24 hours later I was fine.
Anyways this is going to be a slightly different newsletter, it’s been a slow week but you’ll understand as you read below…
This week on the blog:
I’ve got nothing for you this week but I know I’ll have a lot of things to talk about in the next few weeks. There are a few major TV things coming out soon so expect a few blogs in June.
The reason why I have nothing for you this week is because I’ve been super busy studying for the GMAT. Some of you might know that I’m applying to do my MBA this fall. I’m getting closer to the deadline and my GMAT score is inching closer to my goal score. I’m seeing progress which makes me feel good, however I’ve got quite a ways to go. The goal this week is to try to really nail some foundational math. If any of you teach math let me know — I could use some extra help. If you’re in Toronto, I’d drop off some baked goods/wine in thanks :)
Things to watch this week:
Well if you want regular TV to watch, it’s another slow week. I’ve checked all the press releases and unless you’re watching something that is coming out week to week, there are next to no new TV shows this week. I was shocked. I’ve looked ahead and there are a bunch of exciting things coming out in June, but this week is particularly dead.
However, if you are into sports, this is a great time for you. The Jays have five games this week (I hear Vladdy is doing well) and Stanley Cup hockey is exciting. We had a frustrating game last night, but I know game six is going to be good (catch that on Saturday at 7:30 ET.)
This is also a great time to catch up on things that are on your to-watch list.
Like if you missed yesterday’s release of Friends: The Reunion, watch that tonight.
Tonight if you want to pay for Premier Access, Disney+ is premiering the new movie Cruella. Starring Emma Stone and Emma Thompson, this is the Cruella de Vil origin story. Former Cruella Glenn Close is an executive producer on this project — so just a full collection of powerful ladies. 101 Dalmatians was one of my favourite movies as a kid and I can’t wait to see this… however I will realistically wait for it to come out on regular Disney+ later this year. Watch the trailer here.
On Monday, I’m looking forward to a new French reality show on Netflix, The Parisian Agency: Exclusive Properties. I haven’t seen a trailer but I’m sold on the premise alone: a luxury real estate show focused on a family-owned business in Paris. SIGN ME UP.
On Wednesday, Netflix has a new Brazilian comedy series called Carnaval. It’s about an influencer who takes her group of friends on a trip for Carnival. It looks like fun (maybe slightly cheesy). Check out the trailer here.
Finally, on Thursday we’ve got my one MUST watch of the week. You’ve probably heard the buzz about Girls5eva — the Tina Fey–produced TV show starring Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareilles, Paula Pell, Ashley Park, and Busy Phillipps, about a one-hit-wonder girl band from the 90s. I’m SO excited to watch this show. Set your PVRs — the show airs at 9 p.m. on Thursdays or you can watch it on STACKTV (the Corus app). Watch the trailer here.
Other things to check out:
Again… This is a QUIET week. I haven’t seen anything on the internet that has made me excited. A few fun videos on TikTok, but really nothing much. Perhaps it’s the long weekend… it’s getting people off screens.
In industry news — Amazon bought MGM. This is HUGE. Here’s an article with all the details. Overall, I’m so interested in this. I’m not an Amazon fan (I don’t have Prime, I rarely use Amazon to buy things) but this is going to make a HUGE dent in the industry. Expect all your fave MGM titles to be pulled off streaming services (say goodbye to Legally Blonde, Netflix) when their contracts are up and end up on Amazon Prime. PLUS — this means that Amazon owns the OG tapes… Stephen Colbert has ideas.
I’m LOVING the new BTS song “Butter.” It’s such a jam.
I’m also loving the new Arkells song “All Roads.” It’s going to be killllleer when they perform it live. Check out the video here.
If you want to know what Regé-Jean Page is up to post Bridgerton — go check out his interview with Variety.
To end this apparently it’s snowing today in Toronto?! So maybe that’s why this week has been slow. We’re all slowly freezing and it feels like March...
Have a great weekend,
-Paula

Editor’s Pick:
It may be chilly in Toronto today, but I’m ready to replace my sombre cold-weather playlist with some summery pop songs. I’m starting with Sigrid’s new single, “Mirror,” a dancy song about self-acceptance.
