Climb aboard, we're talking about Below Deck 🛥️
Plus - Framing Britney Spears is finally streaming in Canada!
Hi All,
I hope you’re all doing well. We’re about to hit March, and with the one-year anniversary of the pandemic coming up — I’ve been feeling like a bit of a broken record. Still stressed, still tired, still very much over all of this. However, it has been so gorgeous here in Toronto this week and the weather has put me in such a good mood.
I’m also deep into a new show which always makes me feel good. Last week I talked about the new Gilmore Girls-esque show Ginny and Georgia. I thought it was going to be Hallmark-y, but it’s not. It’s great. Like I can’t stop thinking about it. It has everything I love — teen drama, Scott Porter, and it’s filmed in my favourite Ontario town — Cobourg, Ontario! I want to know what you’ve been watching lately. Hit reply to this email and let me know :)
Let’s get to it.
This week on the blog:
My roommate and I have slowly made our way through all 8 seasons of Below Deck, all five seasons of Below Deck: Mediterranean, and the one season of Below Deck: Sailing Yacht.
To mark this special occasion I have TWO blog posts about the show.
First up, we’re going to talk about what makes this show so good. It is a brilliant TV show and I’m going to try to convince you to watch it. Read that here.
Second, this one is for the fans. No one asked for this, but I went through all 101 Below Deck cast members and ranked them from worst to best. It was way too much fun and I hope you’ll enjoy it and if you are into this, send me an email. Let’s debate why certain people are where they are on the list. Read that here.
Things to watch this week:
#FreeBritney — FINALLY Canada is getting the much-buzzed-about doc Framing Britney Spears. I’ve been dying to watch this and while I’ve seen a few links floating around, I’ve been waiting for an official airing. I’m so excited to see what all the buzz is about. I’ve been tracking the #FreeBritney movement casually for the last few years but I’m really curious about why this doc is getting the buzz on a larger level and why this is making #FreeBritney mainstream. You can watch the doc today on Crave and check out the trailer here.
On Gem, you’ve got season two of Grand Designs: New Zealand. It’s very pretty and very relaxing. It’s a Sunday afternoon show if you know what I mean. That starts streaming today.
On Monday, the documentary Biggie: I Got a Story to Tell starts streaming on Netflix. It looks really good. Watch the trailer here.
Trickster has been on CBC Gem for a while, but it hits Netflix on Monday. Yes there is the scandal with the director, but everything else about this show is amazing. It’s a shame they are not doing a second season.
On Wednesday Amy Poehler’s new movie, Moxie, is out on Netflix. This might be one of my top picks of the week. It looks like a lot of fun (fighting the man with a zine — amazing!) and friends who have read the book have said great things about the story. I’m very excited. Watch the trailer here.
For fans of Mormons and murder, we’ve got a new true crime show — Murder Among the Mormans. Watch the trailer here and check it out on Netflix on Wednesday.
Finally, also on Wednesday — we’ve got the premiere of Big Brother Canada season nine! I might be a bit biased because I’ve worked on this show in the past, but this is a really fun show. If you’ve never watched it, this would be a great year to start. The basic concept: A group of people (houseguests) are locked in a house (like us currently) and they compete to be the last person in the house. Each week they complete challenges to gain the power to nominate two houseguests for eviction, and compete to gain the power to veto a nomination (to keep themselves or their allies safe). The houseguests then vote one of the nominees out of the house and the cycle starts again. It’s on three times a week and is well worth your time. Meet the houseguests here.
Other things to check out:
Move over Oprah — James Corden has the Prince Harry interview first! On last night’s The Late Late Show, James and Prince Harry rode around LA on an open top bus and had a great adventure. It will put a smile on your face. Watch it here.
I miss my bar. My local shut down, but this hits the spot. Trust me. Click the link :)
Members of the BTS Army have probably already seen this — but if you want to get in on the BTS action, they were on MTV Unplugged this week and did a great cover of Coldplay’s Fix You.
Mara Wilson wrote an op-ed for The New York Times about how Hollywood treats young women in the wake of the Britney Spears doc. Read it here.
There was a massive rumour going out yesterday that Emma Watson was retiring from acting. This is not true. I’m thrilled. I adore seeing her on screen.
If you want a laugh — check out TikToker Jack Martin’s LinkedIn. He’s essentially trolling corporate culture and it always makes me smile.
There is a new Netflix movie coming out at the end of March called A Week Away. I honestly don’t know if I’m going to absolutely love it or vehemently hate it. It’s a movie-musical about a week at church camp. I cannot wait to judge it. Watch the trailer here.
Have a great weekend,
-Paula

I’m trying to decode Maisie Peters’ music video for her new single “John Hughes Movie.” Is there a John Hughes zombie movie I don’t know about? Anyway, “this ain’t no John Hughes movie,” but it’s a lot of fun!
